We are excited to announce that Network Rail, owner and manager of the UK rail network, has commissioned us to implement SiteSentinel – our online worksite induction platform – to safely manage the influx of visitors at three of its train stations on its Western route: London Paddington, Reading and Bristol Temple Meads.
All three stations are large and busy – with a combined total of around 75 million passengers passing through every year. Each station also welcomes a range of visitors every day, including contractors for day to day maintenance, retail workers to service the vast range of shopping outlets, charity personnel for collections and awareness raising initiatives and an army of ‘Here to Help’ volunteers.
To ensure every single station visit is safe and productive, each individual visitor must undergo a comprehensive online site safety induction prior to their arrival – using our SiteSentinel platform.
To support the different types of visitor, SiteSentinel offers various information ‘pathways’ which means each individual visitor will only see the information relevant to their visit. The majority of usage taps into the contractor pathway due to the ongoing station care and maintenance requirements. This is closely followed by the retail pathway, to service the constant flow of retail personnel coming through the station.
Certain occasions such as large sporting events will see an upsurge in the ‘Here to Help’ volunteer numbers needing access to the station. For these volunteers, SiteSentinel will then generate specialised induction content such as information about personal safety and helping to prevent suicides at the station.
Network Rail chose SiteSentinel to streamline their induction process following its hugely successful roll out at Reading station, which remains the biggest SiteSentinel station implementation so far in terms of the range of different content pathways available for different users.
Prior to being implemented at train stations, SiteSentinel could be more commonly found supporting visitors at train depots. There are areas of overlap between stations and depots, however, there are also many differences. For example, providing access to Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) is much more important at the stations due to the volume of maintenance work that goes on overhead, e.g. lights, signage, gantries, etc.
The SiteSentinel platform provides an online induction, test and administration interface. The system is designed to consistently deliver relevant, high-quality information using text, photos, video and illustrations. SiteSentinel provides an audit trail of site inductions for staff, visitors, and contractors.
