Safety Critical Communications Training

Safety Critical Communications Training - The Rail Team

Lucid have been commissioned to develop a cross-industry training programme for rail industry safety critical communications.

Rail Safety and Standards Board has identified the need to develop a high quality, fit for purpose training programme. The development project comprises three stages: requirements research, programme development, and reporting.

Lucid has partnered with the human factors team at ERM to deliver the project. Lucid will manage the project and focus on developing the training materials whilst ERM focus on the research and reporting activities.

The project is due for completion in March 2017.

Non-Technical Skills Module for Network Rail

planningDecisionMakingLucid have been commissioned to develop the first of several individual modules deriving from the original ‘Non-Technical Skills: Route to Excellence’ DVD released earlier this year. The Planning and Decision Making module will cover one of the core eight NTS in further detail.

Network Rail signallers not only need to be technically competent but must possess a range of non-technical skills to be successful. Research from safety critical industries has shown that training which includes NTS has been associated with improvements in performance and a reduction in incidents and accidents.

The module will look at Planning and Decision Making in depth, covering anticipation and the decision cycle. The course will employ voiceover, supported by graphics and animations, with multiple discussion questions to engage the audience.

Human Factors Course Redevelopment for Network Rail

hfLogoLucid have been commissioned to redevelop Networks Rail’s ‘Investigating Human Factors’ eLearning program.

Currently, the Human Factors course provides Network Rail with comprehensive information on conducting an investigation, including the classifications of errors and failures, and how to select the appropriate tools and techniques to use in investigations.

A main aim of the course is for the investigators to understand peoples’ strengths and weaknesses, ensuring systems are designed to match individuals’ mental and physical capability. Considering that 80 – 90% of accidents involve human error it is important for investigators to fully understand human factors, enabling them to predict misuse and identify ways of managing it.

Lucid will redevelop the course to create an updated version which is concise, engaging, and informative. This will involve interviewing senior members of the Network Rail investigation team, developing new content, and creating an improved eLearning program.
